WIN FOR NICK - How TV Turned the Jets First Win into a Shared Story

After seven straight losses to start the season and utter disappointment, the New York Jets were able to break through and win their first game of the 2025 season in a thriller vs the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets win was an incredible victory winning 39-38 and their win was so much bigger than just an impact in the standings. Just a couple hours before kickoff, it was announced to the public that Jets hall of famer and NFL legend Nick Mangold suddenly passed away at the age of 41 years old. From the moment the broadcast began on CBS, television transformed this game into a story of loss, unity, and redemption. This broadcast showcased just how powerful sports on TV can be in shaping how we experience emotion through our screens.

TV’s five channels of communications were working in all phases from the beginning with graphics placed a black-and-white “In Memory of Nick Mangold” and pictures of the former Jets in his uniform. The announcer's voices softened for the moment of silence and as they talked about Nick Mangold and his amazing impact on the Jets organization. The sound through the crowd was cheers as the Jets took the field. The music from the CBS broadcast tied the tribute together and made for a very emotional moment for everyone in the NFL. The broadcast didn’t just show a game, it showed a powerful
moment of remembrance for an NFL great and every better person off the field.

As the game began, it started off poorly for the Jets, as they were not having success on the field and the Bengals were capitalizing on their mistakes. The Jets looked like the same old Jets fans had been watching throughout the first seven games, with an offense that could not find any rhythm. However even down double digits late in the second half, the Jets continued to fight and strain and keep pushing forward. Slowly they were able to chip away and cut the score to only down 6 points. On the Jets last possession of the game, running back Breece Hall threw a pass on a trick play to rookie tight end Mason Taylor to take a 1 point lead with less than 2 minutes in the game. The Jets defense was able to get a stop and give the Jets their first win of the season.

TV was able to capture these emotional moments for a team that has been through much adversity. Quarterback Justin Fields was relieved to finally get a win on a sad day in the Jets community. Television was able to capture all the emotions from this game including the relief, the sadness, and the pride of a fighting team that finally broke through after weeks of heartbreak and disappointment. As Kennedy and Hills talk about, Sports TV uses images, sound, and commentary to make fans feel connected to the moment. This CBS broadcast did exactly that, turning an emotional win into a story of unity and resilience. A moment that the Jets community will never forget.
