The Jets on the Global Stage in London
The New York Jets headed across the pond in Week 6 for their matchup in London, England against the Denver Broncos in what was supposed to be one of the NFL’s top showcases of the international season. The build up for the New York Jets trip to London was massive. The social media team did a takeover in London throughout the week with Jets logos and merchandise appearing in all of the different areas of London. The Jets social media team put out content hyping up the game in London and did personalized videos featuring historical landmarks in the city. For the Jets this international matchup was bigger than just a regular season game, it was a chance to showcase their brand of football to a massive international audience.
However the excitement of the international trip for the game quickly faded once the game kicked off. The Jets faced huge struggles on offense with another super poor performance. This offensive performance was historically bad for the Jets as they only recorded 82 total yards and had negative 10 passing yards. One of the worst offensive performances in team history. Quarterback Justin Fields completed just nine passes throughout the game while also being sacked nine times. However even with this terrible performance, the Jets still had a chance to win thanks to a solid defensive effort. They ended up losing 13-11, failing to score a touchdown, and falling to 0-6, the only winless team left in the NFL.
Even with the poor performance, millions of fans worldwide tuned in to watch an NFL game. In the book Sport, Media and Society, they talk about how sporting events are “staged specifically for television” with commentary, crowd shots, and storytelling made for a global audience. The NFL’s international series and specifically the London games are building football as entertainment for a group of fans who don’t typically watch. Even with a struggling Jets team on the field and a boring offensive game, the NFL still does a great job promoting their product to an unfamiliar audience.
The book explains that sports on TV uses the “five channels of communication” to help the fans feel the emotion of the game with the sound, images, commentary, voice, and music. The NFL network broadcast during the Jets vs Broncos game did a great job of helping fans feel like they were in the moment and gave a great viewing experience for the European and other international fans.
For Jets fans watching back in the US, the trip to London was supposed to be a bounce back game and a chance to showcase their brand of football to the world. Instead it was an embarrassing performance that had many Jets fans questioning what is going on. However the trip to London showcased how powerful TV is and how the lights shine brightest on the global stage. The Jets look to get their first win in Week 7.
