Reframing the Future and Why the Jets Trades Aren’t a Tank Job

Image
The New York Jets made massive news at the NFL trade deadline in trading away two of their biggest stars in cornerback Sauce Gardener and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams who were both former top 5 draft picks for the team. In exchange for giving away their two best defensive players, the Jets received multiple future first round draft picks. From an outside perspective, it was easy for the media and outside attention to come up with the narrative that the Jets are tanking and that they have given up. Since the team has had an underperforming season with a current record of 2-8 and little to no chance at  a playoff berth, the narrative of the team tanking gained a lot of traction. But as talked about in Week 11 of Sport, Fitness and the Media, there is rarely one absolute truth in sports. Instead, sports stories in most cases are built through interpretation, perspective, and context and these massive trades by the Jets are no different. While these two stars for the Jets had a bi...

WIN FOR NICK - How TV Turned the Jets First Win into a Shared Story

Image
After seven straight losses to start the season and utter disappointment, the New York Jets were able to break through and win their first game of the 2025 season in a thriller vs the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets win was an incredible victory winning 39-38 and their win was so much bigger than just an impact in the standings. Just a couple hours before kickoff, it was announced to the public that Jets hall of famer and NFL legend Nick Mangold suddenly passed away at the age of 41 years old. From the moment the broadcast began on CBS, television transformed this game into a story of loss, unity, and redemption. This broadcast showcased just how powerful sports on TV can be in shaping how we experience emotion through our screens.  TV’s five channels of communications were working in all phases from the beginning with graphics placed a black-and-white “In Memory of Nick Mangold” and pictures of the former Jets in his uniform. The announcer's voices softened for the moment of silence ...

The Jets on the Global Stage in London

Image
The New York Jets headed across the pond in Week 6 for their matchup in London, England against the Denver Broncos in what was supposed to be one of the NFL’s top showcases of the international season. The build up for the New York Jets trip to London was massive. The social media team did a takeover in London throughout the week with Jets logos and merchandise appearing in all of the different areas of London. The Jets social media team put out content hyping up the game in London and did personalized videos featuring historical landmarks in the city. For the Jets this international matchup was bigger than just a regular season game, it was a chance to showcase their brand of football to a massive international audience.  However the excitement of the international trip for the game quickly faded once the game kicked off. The Jets faced huge struggles on offense with another super poor performance. This offensive performance was historically bad for the Jets as they only recorded ...

Framing Failure - The 0-5 Same Old Jets and The Power of the Media

Image
After an encouraging start for the New York Jets 2025 season despite a close loss in week 1, the team has taken a turn for the worse. With new leadership in the front office and a new coaching staff, energy was extremely high and it looked as if the Jets were turning a corner. But now after five straight losses and being the only winless team in the NFL, the narrative has shifted completely. What started out as a season full of hope and promise, has now turned into a season of disappointment and embarrassment, and the media has a lot to do with this change.  In the book Sport, Media and Society, the author explains how media and sports journalists don’t actually report the news, they just explain to us that they pick what is important and decide how it should be told. While there have been moments of success during games for the Jets and there was hope in the headlines, the media has now created the narrative of the “Same Old Jets”. These headlines and stories in the media use word...

The 2025 New York Jets football season kicked off on September 7th, 2025 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and while the Jets narrowly lost their home opener in a close battle 34-32, there were many positive outcomes that should have Jets fans excited for the new future. Despite the loss, the Jets showed stability and promise that has fans excited. That future begins with the leadership the Jets acquired in the offseason starting with new head coach Aaron Glenn.  Jets head coach Aaron Glenn began his tenure leading his team into battle during week 1 and showcasing the new tough style of football the Jets would be playing this season. The offensive performance under Coach Glenn was extremely impressive scoring 32 points which showed a lot of growth for a Jets team that struggled the year prior. These flashes have Jets Nation buzzing over the new team and especially over new starting quarterback Justin Fields, who the Jets signed for a 2 year 40 million dollar contract back in March. J...
