WIN FOR NICK - How TV Turned the Jets First Win into a Shared Story

After seven straight losses to start the season and utter disappointment, the New York Jets were able to break through and win their first game of the 2025 season in a thriller vs the Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets win was an incredible victory winning 39-38 and their win was so much bigger than just an impact in the standings. Just a couple hours before kickoff, it was announced to the public that Jets hall of famer and NFL legend Nick Mangold suddenly passed away at the age of 41 years old. From the moment the broadcast began on CBS, television transformed this game into a story of loss, unity, and redemption. This broadcast showcased just how powerful sports on TV can be in shaping how we experience emotion through our screens.  TV’s five channels of communications were working in all phases from the beginning with graphics placed a black-and-white “In Memory of Nick Mangold” and pictures of the former Jets in his uniform. The New York Jets headed across the pond in Week 6 for their matchup in London, England against the Denver Broncos in what was supposed to be one of the NFL’s top showcases of the international season. The build up for the New York Jets trip to London was massive. The social media team did a takeover in London throughout the week with Jets logos and merchandise appearing in all of the different areas of London. The Jets social media team put out content hyping up the game in London and did personalized videos featuring historical landmarks in the city. For the Jets this international matchup was bigger than just a regular season game, it was a chance to showcase their brand of football to a massive international audience.  However the excitement of the international trip for the game quickly faded once the game kicked off. After an encouraging start for the New York Jets 2025 season despite a close loss in week 1, the team has taken a turn for the worse. With new leadership in the front office and a new coaching staff, energy was extremely high and it looked as if the Jets were turning a corner. But now after five straight losses and being the only winless team in the NFL, the narrative has shifted completely.
